VOICES OF THE JUNGLE, ST ANN’S WAREHOUSE, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

MIGUEL AMORTEGUI

Voices of the Jungle is a powerful exhibition by acclaimed artist and photojournalist Miguel Amortegui, presented at St Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition brings together the work of six international artists and photojournalists who have spent years documenting the migrant crisis on the frontlines, offering a rare and deeply human perspective on one of the most urgent issues of our time.

Alongside Miguel Amortegui, the exhibition features the work of Sarah Hickson, Omar Imam, John Moore, Abdul Saboor, and Griselda San Martin, with additional contributions from Good Chance Dome and The Nation. Together, their work spans multiple geographies, from the original Calais Jungle to Serbia and the southern borders of the United States, forming a global and interconnected portrait of displacement.

Voices of the Jungle emerged as a direct response to the oversaturated and often irresponsible media coverage of the refugee humanitarian crisis. Rather than repeating images of suffering stripped of context, the exhibition seeks to return agency and voice to the thousands of refugees who were trapped, criminalised, and mistreated in the so-called Jungle in Calais, France. It challenges viewers to look beyond headlines and statistics, and to confront the human cost of political failure.

The exhibition offers an intimate and moving portrayal of refugee lives, exploring personal stories, hopes, fears, and dreams, while placing dignity at the centre of the narrative. Through long-term engagement and trust, the artists reveal moments of tenderness, resilience, and strength that are too often absent from mainstream representations.

Miguel Amortegui is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer, investigative journalist, and participatory photography facilitator. His practice moves fluidly between commercial work, not-for-profit organisations, and grassroots social projects, and his career has taken him across the UK and internationally. While his work has been exhibited across Europe, Africa, and South America, what matters most to him are the relationships formed along the way — connections built through shared time, conversations, cigarettes, and cups of coffee, where stories are not taken, but exchanged.

Voices of the Jungle is more than an exhibition. It is a testament to resilience, resistance, and the enduring humanity of those living through displacement, inviting audiences to witness the migrant crisis not as a distant issue, but as a shared human responsibility.
